What to Do Right After an Accident in Iowa

Then everything happens fast. Your heart is racing, other drivers are involved, maybe there is damage or someone is hurt, and you are trying to think clearly in a moment that is anything but clear. A lot of Iowa drivers end up making decisions in those first few minutes that make the claim harder later, not because they did anything wrong, but because nobody ever walked them through what to actually do.

Having a simple plan in your head before it happens changes everything about how smooth the process goes afterward.

Ask most people what to do right after an accident and you will get a vague answer. Call insurance, maybe take a photo, exchange information somehow. Nobody has an actual order of steps in mind. In the moment, adrenaline takes over and people either forget things entirely or do them out of order, which can end up mattering more than they expect.

Here is where it gets costly. People apologize at the scene without thinking, even when it is not their fault, just out of instinct. That can complicate things when it comes to determining fault later. People forget to take photos before anything gets moved, which makes it harder to prove what actually happened. People exchange phone numbers but not insurance information, or they never write down the other driver’s license plate. Some drivers do not call their insurance company until days later, which can slow down or complicate the claim.

None of these are big dramatic mistakes. They are small oversights made under stress, and they are the reason claims sometimes take longer or get more complicated than they need to.

Nobody teaches this. It is not something covered in driver’s ed in any real depth, and most people go their entire driving life without ever needing to use it, until the one day they do. Without a clear order of steps already in your head, stress fills in the blanks, and stress is not a great decision maker.

Make sure everyone is safe first. If you can move your vehicle out of traffic safely, do it. If anyone is hurt, call 911 right away.

Call the police, even for a minor accident. A police report gives you an official record of what happened, which matters more than people expect once a claim is being processed.

Exchange information with the other driver. Get their name, phone number, insurance company, policy number, and license plate, not just a phone number.

Take photos before anything gets moved if it is safe to do so. Get the vehicles, the damage, the road, and the surrounding area from a few different angles.

Do not say it was your fault, even if you feel like it might have been. Just stick to the facts when you talk to the other driver, the police, or witnesses.

Get the names and contact information of anyone who saw what happened, in case their account is needed later.

Call your insurance company the same day if you can. The sooner the claim gets started, the smoother the process usually goes.
